Look at any recent news headline and you'll see something about ChatGPT or Microsoft. But what about our favorite rainbow-colored search engine? It was presumed dead, but it's finally showing some signs of life.

Google declared a code red earlier this year and moved some teams to start building AI products. OG Google founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin got involved in the executive meetings. And these guys have been hands-off since 2019!

So how did Google respond to the imminent threat of ChatGPT? First, they laid off 12,000 employees with a generous severance package. Don't they need these employees to help build AI products?

Then they announced 20+ new AI applications at Google I/O 2023 Developer Conference in May 2023. The rumored applications include:

👗 Virtually try on clothes and shoes before you buy them. We won't need clothes in the metaverse anyways 🤷‍♂️

📹 AI that creates a short video summary from longer videos.

📱 AI wallpaper creator for Google Pixel phones.

🧑‍💻 AI developer tools to build Android apps (like GitHub CoPilot?)

🔎 Google search with integrated AI. Something to fight Bing + ChatGPT.

These all sound exciting, but is it too little too late? The conference is many months away and a lot could happen. Only time will tell how much damage Google will take before they fight back.

In June 2022, a Google engineer claimed their AI was sentient. Let's hope Google has resolved that bug or we might see some unexpected consequences...
